Action
If we want to do something about reducing global warming then a good first step is to starting thinking about energy. Most of the energy we use day to day comes from fossil fuels like oil, and coal. When we use energy, we are directly or inderectly burning fossil fuels, and this process emitts carbon dioxide (CO2), a gas that is known for its ability to trap heat by a process called the greenhouse effect. Because humans use a lot of energy to produce a lot of things, such as food, clothes, electronics etc., the amount of carbon dioxide going into the atmosphere is larger than the amount that the oceans and land (soil and vegetation) can absorb, so the amount of CO2 has been accumulating in the atmosphere. This rise in CO2 is partially responsible for the warming planet over the last few decades. Fortunately, there are many things we can do to help reduce both energy use and greenhouse gas emission, and here is a list of how to get started.
- Personal consumption
- Reduce our consumption of products (food, clothing, goods, etc.).
- Try purchasing used items that can be reused, or good quality items that will last a long time.
- Recyle products when possible.
- Home and personal energy use:
- Use the heater and air conditioner less. Set the thermostat a couple of degrees higher in the summer and a couple of degrees lower in the winter.
- Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) or LEDs.
- Purchase energy-efficient appliances when the time comes for you to replace your existing ones.
- Transportation:
- For short local trips, use your bicycle or walk. This can be fun!
- If you fly somewhere, consider taking a direct flight to reduce emissions.
- If you have to fly, consider buying carbon offsets.
- Food:
- Be mindful of where your food comes from
- Try to eat a little less meat in favor of grains and veggies.
- Choose foods that are in seaon and made locally when possible.
- Try to reduce food waste and try composting kitchen scraps or starting a worm farm.
- Spread the word
- There are many ways to start reducing emissions so encourage others to join. Share your success and challenges with others and encourage your community to make a difference. And of course, ask your friends to become a friend of the Green Ninja!
